According to Tom’s Guide’s AI editor Amanda Caswell, using special “thinking prompts” can help AI systems like Claude reason more clearly and give more useful responses. These prompts are often used with chatbots such as Claude.
Caswell says many users simply ask a question and expect a good answer. However, AI models like Claude often produce better results when they are guided on how to think about the problem.
Here are seven prompts she recommends.
1. First-principles prompt
This prompt asks the AI to rebuild an explanation from basic facts.
Prompt:
“Explain this problem using first-principles thinking. Break it down to the most fundamental truths and rebuild the explanation from the ground up.”
This method removes assumptions and forces the AI to focus on the core ideas behind a topic.
2. Contrarian prompt
AI models often repeat common opinions. This prompt asks the AI to challenge those views.
Prompt:
“Challenge the common assumption behind this idea. What might skeptics or critics say?”
This helps users see different perspectives and identify possible weaknesses in an argument.
3. Expert panel prompt
This prompt asks the AI to imagine a discussion between experts.
Prompt:
“Imagine a panel of experts discussing this problem. What would different experts disagree about?”
By doing this, the AI can present multiple viewpoints instead of a single answer.
4. Simplify it prompt
Sometimes AI explanations include too many technical terms. This prompt encourages clearer explanations.
Prompt:
“Explain this idea as clearly as possible for a beginner. Avoid jargon and use simple examples.”
This makes the answer easier for people to understand.
5. Improve the idea prompt
Instead of simply agreeing with a user’s idea, this prompt asks the AI to analyze it.
Prompt:
“Critique this idea and suggest ways it could be improved.”
This helps users refine their ideas and find possible improvements.
6. Structured thinking prompt
Some users want to understand how an AI reaches its conclusions. This prompt helps explain the reasoning.
Prompt:
“Analyze this problem step by step and explain your reasoning.”
This often produces clearer and more organized answers.
7. Real-world test prompt
AI answers can sometimes stay theoretical. This prompt asks the AI to think about real-life situations.
Prompt:
“If this idea were applied in the real world, what challenges or trade-offs would appear?”
This helps reveal practical problems that might not appear in a simple explanation.
Why prompts matter
Caswell says AI systems respond not only to questions but also to how the problem is framed. When users guide the reasoning process, the AI can produce answers that are clearer, more balanced, and more useful.
By using these simple prompts, people may be able to get better results from modern AI chatbots.
