28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is now playing in theaters, and fans are already asking one big question: will there be a third film in the series?
The 28 franchise began with Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later in 2002, followed by 28 Weeks Later in 2007. In 2025, Boyle returned to reboot the story with 28 Years Later, bringing the rage virus back to the big screen.
Directed by Nia DaCosta, The Bone Temple continues that story. It follows Spike as he tries to escape a violent cult, while Dr. Ian Kelson searches for a way to stop the rage virus.
The film’s final scene strongly hints that the story is not over. Survivors flee the chaos and reach a fortified rural home, where Jim, played again by Cillian Murphy, appears with his daughter. The moment clearly sets up a new chapter.
While Sony Pictures has not made an official announcement, reports suggest a third film is already in development. Deadline reported in December that the studio is moving forward with another sequel.
According to the report, Murphy is in talks to return and Alex Garland is writing the script. Danny Boyle has also said he would direct the third film if it moves ahead.
Box office numbers support the decision. The Bone Temple earned $2.1 million in Thursday previews and is expected to make up to $22 million over the holiday weekend.
The film is also a critical success, with strong scores from both critics and audiences. With momentum building, a third 28 Years Later film now looks more likely than ever.
