OpenAI may enter the audio wearable market with a new AI-powered device, codenamed “Sweetpea,” expected in September 2026.
Leaks suggest the earbuds could feature a metal “eggstone” design with pill-shaped modules, a phone-class 2nm chip, and the ability to perform AI tasks on iPhones via Siri. The project is reportedly prioritized by Jony Ive’s team.
The “Sweetpea” earbuds are projected to sell 40–50 million units in their first year, according to sources. They may have two detachable modules that sit behind the ear for enhanced functionality.
OpenAI is also reportedly developing other AI devices, including a pen-shaped gadget called “Gumdrop”, capable of capturing handwriting and responding to voice commands. In total, OpenAI is preparing up to five AI devices by 2028, though details on the remaining products are unclear.
As of now, OpenAI has not confirmed any of the leaks, so these plans should be treated as unverified.
