Google Will Refund Users for 2016–2023 Play Store Purchases

Google will compensate users who made purchases on the Google Play Store between 2016 and 2023 as part of a €599 million antitrust settlement. Of this total, €539 million will be allocated directly to affected users.

To qualify, users must have made at least one purchase on Google Play during the specified period and had a legal U.S. address at the time. Current location or the origin of the purchase does not affect eligibility. Google began notifying users about the compensation process on December 2, 2025.

Payments will be sent automatically through platforms like PayPal or Venmo, using the email or phone number linked to the user’s Google Play account. Compensation amounts range from €1.71 to €3.77 per user, with some variations depending on spending history.

Important dates include February 19, 2026, as the deadline for users to opt out or raise objections, and April 30, 2026, when the final hearing to approve the settlement will take place.

In addition to financial compensation, the settlement requires Google to adjust its Play Store distribution policies and payment methods, aiming to increase market competition and improve user choice.

The move is part of broader antitrust scrutiny of tech giants, reflecting ongoing efforts to ensure fair practices in digital marketplaces and protect consumer rights.
