Elon Musk Launches Grokipedia, an AI-Powered Alternative to Wikipedia

Musk

Elon Musk has launched Grokipedia, an online encyclopedia that uses artificial intelligence to create and edit entries. The site went live on Monday and aims to offer an alternative to Wikipedia, which Musk has criticized as biased.

Grokipedia briefly crashed after its launch but now hosts more than 800,000 AI-generated entries. In comparison, Wikipedia has nearly eight million articles written by humans. The website has a simple design, including a search bar and a basic logo, allowing users to explore topics from public figures to technology companies.

Musk said Grokipedia will “purge out the propaganda” he believes exists on Wikipedia. Some entries appear to reflect his personal and political views. For example, the site questions the quality of medical treatments for transgender people and highlights criticisms of former Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal, details not found on Wikipedia.

The launch is part of Musk’s growing online media network, which includes his social media platform X and his AI company, xAI. Experts note that controlling online information has long been a way to influence public opinion.

Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales expressed doubt that AI can match human editors’ accuracy. Wikimedia Foundation representatives also said that while AI tools increasingly scrape Wikipedia content, visits from human users have dropped this year.

Grokipedia raises questions about bias, AI in knowledge platforms, and the influence of tech billionaires on public information.
