Ballon d’Or 2025 Honors Diogo Jota & Brother André Silva With Emotional Tribute

The 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris paid a heartfelt tribute to Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who tragically died in a car accident on July 3, 2025, in northern Spain. Jota was 28, while Silva was 25.

The tribute took place on September 22 at the Théâtre du Châtelet, where a moving video montage celebrated Jota’s career with Liverpool and Portugal’s national team, as well as Silva’s time with Portuguese club Penafiel. Host Kate Scott told the audience, “This summer the football family was left in shock when we learned of the passing of Diogo Jota, who lost his life alongside his brother, André Silva.”

The emotional segment brought many in the audience to tears. Jota’s widow, Rute Cardoso, attended with their three young children and wore an elegant white gown on the red carpet. Cardoso married Jota just 11 days before his death. His parents, Joaquim and Isabel Silva, were also present, joined by other family members.

Liverpool players Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker attended, with Van Dijk placing 28th in the Ballon d’Or rankings. Head coach Arne Slot was there for his nomination for the Johan Cruyff Trophy for best coach.

Fans on X (formerly Twitter) praised the tribute, calling it “very emotional” and highlighting Cardoso’s strength. One post read, “What a strong woman!”

The tragedy sent shockwaves through world football. FIFA President Gianni Infantino said Jota would be “sorely missed,” and moments of silence were held at major matches, including UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 games. Liverpool also honored Jota with a special ceremony before their first home game of the season.

The tribute served as a reminder of Jota’s impact as a forward known for his pace and finishing, while also celebrating Silva’s promise as a young player.
