Tesla has officially released its Robotaxi app to the public, allowing iOS users in the United States to join a waitlist and book autonomous rides in driverless Model Y vehicles. The service is launching first in Austin, Texas, and San Francisco, with wider expansion planned in the coming months.

Previously limited to investors and influencers, the Robotaxi service is now accessible to anyone aged 18 or older. The app features a simple interface where riders can enter destinations, receive real-time vehicle updates, and view availability maps. It also supports multiple languages and includes a carousel highlighting robotaxi features. An Android version is expected to follow.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk first announced the robotaxi project last year. Pilot services began in Austin in June 2025 and San Francisco in July 2025. Some rides now operate fully driverless without safety drivers, although regulatory approvals remain a key factor for expansion. Musk has said he hopes to see widespread unsupervised full self-driving vehicles operating by next year.

The launch of the Robotaxi app underscores Tesla’s broader push into AI and robotics, as outlined in its “Master Plan Part 4,” which envisions automation reducing both labor and energy costs. The service will use dynamic pricing and is intended to grow into a nationwide ride-hailing network.

The release marks a significant step toward Tesla’s long-promised goal of a global autonomous ride-sharing service, positioning it in competition with established players like Uber, Lyft, and Waymo.
