Idaho Murder Suspect Fought Victim in ‘Intense Struggle Before Fleeing

Newly unsealed police documents have revealed chilling and graphic details about the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students by Bryan Kohberger, who was sentenced to life in prison earlier this week.

The reports describe the killings as more brutal than previously known. According to responding officers, Kaylee Goncalves was left “disfigured” beyond recognition, with her injuries so severe that her face was unrecognizable.

The documents also detail a violent confrontation between Kohberger and Xana Kernodle, who was found with deep defensive wounds between her fingers, suggesting she fought back intensely. Investigators believe Kernodle may have heard or witnessed Kohberger killing her roommates upstairs before being attacked herself.

Police say Ethan Chapin, Kernodle’s boyfriend, was likely killed in his sleep. His body was found in bed, partially covered by a blanket.

A surviving roommate, Dylan Mortensen, told police she saw a masked man walk past her room and exit through a sliding glass door. She also recalled hearing footsteps, screams, and a chilling voice saying, “You’re gonna be fine. I’m gonna help you.”

Reports also mention a possible fast food delivery to the house shortly before the killings, raising speculation that Kohberger may have taken the food as he fled.

Prosecutors now believe Kernodle may not have been one of Kohberger’s original targets and may have encountered him by chance after the first murders took place.

At the sentencing hearing, Steve Goncalves, Kaylee’s father, addressed Kohberger directly, calling him “a complete joke” and saying the world would forget him.
