Chicago immigration authorities have recaptured a Mexican illegal immigrant accused of decapitating a woman in Illinois, after he was released by a local judge despite his immigration status.
Jose Luis Mendoza-Gonzalez, 52, from Waukegan, Illinois, was arrested in April on charges including concealing a corpse, abusing a corpse, and obstruction of justice. Authorities say Mendoza-Gonzalez claimed the victim, 37-year-old Megan Bros, died of an overdose at his home. Instead of reporting her death, he allegedly decapitated her and stored her body in a bleach-filled container on his property.
Bros had been reported missing by her family in February, and her body was found two months later at Mendoza-Gonzalez’s property.
Following his initial court appearance, Lake County Judge Randie Bruno released Mendoza-Gonzalez from custody. ICE was reportedly not informed of his release, despite his illegal immigration status.
Judge Bruno, who ran for a judicial position in Illinois in 2019, is known for her progressive views and emphasizes kindness and understanding in her judicial approach.
Antioch Mayor Scott Gartner criticized the release, stating he was shocked that Mendoza-Gonzalez was freed within 48 hours under the SAFE-T Act. Gartner also expressed concern about the suspect’s illegal status and the risk of fleeing the country.
Mendoza-Gonzalez was later apprehended by ICE at a market in Chicago and remains in custody.
This case raises concerns about “catch and release” policies in sanctuary cities, where illegal immigrants charged with serious crimes have been released or received reduced sentences without notifying immigration authorities. Critics argue this practice allows dangerous individuals to remain free and commit further offenses.
