Chris Pratt is confirmed to reprise his role as the voice of Garfield in the upcoming sequel to The Garfield Movie, released in 2024.
Pratt will also take on a producer role for the new film alongside executives from Alcon Entertainment. The original creator of Garfield, Jim Davis, will continue as an executive producer to help maintain the character’s original spirit.
The Garfield Movie was a commercial success, earning $257.2 million worldwide from a $60 million budget. The film performed well both domestically, making $91.9 million in the US, and internationally, where it grossed $142.7 million.
Key markets included China, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. Despite receiving mixed critical reviews, the family-friendly movie proved profitable for Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures.
Jim Davis has a long history with the Garfield franchise and served as art director for the 2024 film. The sequel is currently in early development, with producers searching for writers and directors.
DNEG Animation, which worked on the first film, will return as the animation studio, while Prime Focus Studios will co-produce alongside Alcon.
Sony Pictures will again handle global distribution. Pratt’s expanding role as producer builds on his experience with animated projects such as The LEGO Movie series and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
