OnePlus Faces US Investigation Over Alleged Data Transfers to China

Two US lawmakers have called on the Department of Commerce to investigate OnePlus, the Chinese smartphone maker, over allegations that its devices send user data to servers in China without consent.

The bipartisan request comes from Republican Representative John Moolenaar of Michigan and Democratic Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois. They cited documents from a “commercial company” suggesting OnePlus may be transferring sensitive personal information, including screenshots, to Chinese servers.

However, no concrete evidence has been made public to support these claims. The lawmakers’ language remains cautious, using terms like “potential transfers,” which has raised questions about the seriousness of the allegations.

Despite calls for an investigation, US authorities have not advised users to stop using OnePlus phones, leading some to question the urgency of the matter.

OnePlus is part of a growing list of Chinese technology companies facing scrutiny in the US over concerns that their data practices could pose national security risks. Similar worries have surrounded TikTok and its parent company ByteDance. Yet, as with TikTok, there is currently no clear proof that OnePlus has engaged in unlawful data collection or misuse.

OnePlus has yet to respond publicly to the investigation requests. The Department of Commerce has not commented.
