In a rare move, South Korea’s major broadcaster SBS is set to air the Chinese drama Legend of Zang Hai, starring Xiao Zhan. This marks only the second time in two decades that a Chinese drama will be shown on Korean television.
The first was My Fair Princess (also known as Princess Returning Pearl), which aired around 20 years ago and gained widespread popularity.
Legend of Zang Hai premiered on May 18, 2025, and quickly rose to international fame. The story follows Zang Hai’s journey to seek justice and revenge after the murder of his family. With a strong plot and emotional storytelling, the drama has captivated audiences in China and across the globe.
The show has topped viewership charts on platforms such as Youku and Disney+, and has been broadcast in more than 190 countries and regions. Director Zheng Xiaolong, known for the acclaimed Legend of Zhen Huan, led the production.
While some viewers have expressed concerns about pacing and character development, overall fan response has been strong. Social media has seen a surge in discussion and fan theories related to the series.
SBS’s decision to air the drama signals the growing international appeal of Chinese historical and costume dramas. It also reflects a significant cultural exchange between China and South Korea through mainstream media.
