Your Phone Can Finally Identify That Song Stuck in Your Head

Gemini on Android

Google has quietly added a useful music feature to Android phones that many users thought was gone forever.

What’s New

Android users can now ask Gemini to identify songs playing nearby or songs they hum. The feature appears as a “Search a song” button in the Gemini assistant app.

This brings back a popular tool that many people used with the old Google Assistant. When Google switched phones to use Gemini instead of Assistant, this song search feature disappeared.

How It Works

Users can access the feature in two ways:

  • Tap the “Search a song” button in Gemini
  • Ask Gemini directly to identify a song

When activated, a pulsing circle shows the app is listening. Gemini then creates a list of possible song matches with percentage scores showing how likely each match is correct.

Performance Results

Testing shows the feature works well for songs playing out loud. When music played in the background, Gemini quickly identified the correct songs.

However, humming produces mixed results. In tests, the actual hummed song often appeared third on the result list or didn’t appear at all.

Availability

The feature uses the same technology as Google Search’s song identification tool. It’s available now on Android phones through the Gemini app, though Google hasn’t made an official announcement about the addition.

The update is free and appears to be rolling out automatically to Android devices with Gemini installed.
