Sony Reveals Future Plans for PS4 as PS5 Era Matures

Sony has officially confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will continue to be supported, even as the PlayStation 5 generation moves closer to its later stages.

The PS4, first released in 2013, has been home to some of the best PlayStation games ever, including Bloodborne, Uncharted 4, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and The Last of Us Part II. Many fans have wondered when Sony might stop supporting the PS4 to focus fully on the PS5 and beyond.

In a recent business update, Sony made it clear that the PS4 still plays an important role in the PlayStation ecosystem. According to Lynn Azar, PlayStation’s Senior Vice President of Finance, the PS4 community is still “active and spending,” making it valuable for the company’s ongoing plans.

Azar said that while PS5 players spend the most money on the platform, PS4 players remain engaged and help provide steady income for PlayStation. She also explained that Sony is working on new ways to help players access games and services across both generations of consoles.

How long the PS4 stays supported will depend on Sony, as well as third-party game developers who decide whether or not to keep making games for the older system.

With the PS6 already rumored to be in development, the PS4 may not have many more years left—but for now, Sony says the console isn’t going anywhere.
