‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ Beats Sherlock Holmes Sequel at Global Box Office

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has crossed $540 million at the global box office after more than a month in theaters. The film earned nearly $180 million in the US and $362 million from international markets.

This total means The Final Reckoning has now passed the $535 million lifetime earnings of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, directed by Guy Ritchie. However, the movie still faces a tough road. With a production cost of around $400 million, it needs about $800 million worldwide just to break even.

The highest-grossing film in the Mission: Impossible series is Fallout, which made over $790 million globally. The Final Reckoning is unlikely to beat that number.

The movie has at least outperformed Dead Reckoning, its direct predecessor, at the domestic box office. However, it still trails globally. Dead Reckoning, released in the same year as Oppenheimer and Barbie, struggled to find success and ended with about $565 million.

The Final Reckoning holds an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes but hasn’t been able to draw in enough viewers to justify its massive budget.

Tom Cruise, the star of the series, may now step away from action roles. He is set to work on a new film with Birdman director Alejandro González Iñárritu.

For now, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is still playing in theaters.
