‘Superman’ Tracking for $90M-$125M Box Office Opening, Reviews Key to Success

Superman Movie

The new Superman movie is currently projected to make $90 million to $125 million in its opening weekend, according to box office tracking. Some early forecasts from NRG put the range even higher, between $125 million to $145 million, but insiders believe the $90M-$125M range is more realistic.

This film marks the first project under DC Studios’ new leadership with James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm. With David Corenswet starring as Superman and Gunn directing, the movie has gained strong attention from fans.

Superman’s early numbers are impressive. Its unaided awareness score—how many people mention the movie without prompting—is at 30, higher than Top Gun: Maverick when that film was tracking toward its massive $126.7M debut. But when it comes to “first choice”—the key measurement of people who are definitely planning to go—Superman is still trailing behind recent hits like The Batman, Thor: Love & Thunder, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Advance ticket sales have been strong. The film’s Amazon Prime Early Access screenings sold quickly, even outperforming presales for Marvel’s upcoming Fantastic Four reboot.

How high Superman flies will depend heavily on reviews. While the character is iconic and familiar to audiences, many moviegoers are waiting to hear word-of-mouth before buying tickets.

So far, the Superman franchise has made $2.56 billion globally across seven films. Big past openers include Batman v Superman ($166M) and Man of Steel ($116.6M). Whether Gunn’s Superman can match or beat those numbers remains to be seen.

The movie opens nationwide on July 11, with early screenings on July 8.
