iPhone 17 Air Could Feature Advanced Battery-Saving OLED in 2027

Apple is working on a new battery-saving display technology for future iPhones, with plans to introduce it in 2027, according to a new report from The Elec.

The technology, called LTPO3 OLED, would improve on Apple’s current display tech by making screens more energy-efficient, especially when showing low-motion content like the always-on display. This would help save battery life by using oxide semiconductors in both the switching and drive transistors of the screen.

Right now, iPhone screens use a mix of fast but power-hungry switches and slower, more efficient ones. By 2027, Apple could switch more of these to the power-saving type, reducing battery drain when the screen refreshes at very low speeds, like 1Hz for clocks and notifications.

This new LTPO3 technology will likely make its debut on a thin iPhone model, possibly called the iPhone 17 Air. Thinner phones have less space for large batteries, making power efficiency more important than on thicker models like the iPhone Pro.

Apple has already tested this advanced display on the Apple Watch Series 10, which gave the company confidence to scale it up for iPhones.

Samsung and LG are expected to manufacture these next-gen screens, but both will need to invest in new production tools. LG, in particular, may face more challenges because of its smaller OLED production capacity compared to Samsung.

Apple is expected to make a final decision on using LTPO3 in one of its 2027 iPhones by late 2025, giving suppliers about two years to prepare for mass production.
