Huawei Pushes HarmonyOS into the PC Market to Challenge Windows and macOS

Huawei has launched its HarmonyOS PC operating system, aiming to compete with industry giants Windows and macOS. The company hopes to attract users by offering a faster and smoother experience, backed by new AI features and quicker startup times.

HarmonyOS PC is Huawei’s own laptop operating system. While Windows and macOS currently dominate the market, Huawei plans to gain ground by appealing to users who want an alternative.

In recent years, Huawei has seen strong growth with HarmonyOS on smartphones. In early 2023, HarmonyOS held just 8% of China’s smartphone OS market, while Android and iOS took the lead. But by late 2024, HarmonyOS NEXT increased its share to 19%, surpassing iOS and coming closer to Android’s 64%.

When it comes to PCs, Windows still leads worldwide, holding about 25.8% of the global market in the first quarter of 2025. In China, Windows controls a massive 80.18% of the PC market. macOS holds just over 2% globally and about 1.2% in China, partly due to restrictions on Apple products.

Huawei is confident that HarmonyOS PC can initially outperform macOS thanks to its speed and smooth user experience. However, competing with Windows’ dominance, especially in China, will be a tougher challenge.

Huawei’s HarmonyOS PC represents a major step toward breaking the long-standing hold of Western operating systems and offering users more choice in their computing platforms.
