Apple fans may finally be getting what they’ve asked for: a touchscreen hybrid Mac and iPad. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is developing a foldable device that merges the iPad and Mac, and it could debut as early as 2028.
While details are limited, Gurman described it as a product that “crosses a foldable iPad with a touch-screen Mac.” This would mark a major shift in Apple’s hardware philosophy and UI strategy, especially as macOS was never designed for touch. But that may be changing soon.
At WWDC 2025, Apple is expected to reveal macOS 16 with a redesigned interface inspired by visionOS, focusing less on cursor-based input and more on touch-friendly interactions.
In parallel, iPadOS 19 is rumored to become more Mac-like, with improvements in multitasking and window management. These changes could lay the foundation for the first real Mac-iPad hybrid.
Apple’s work on a touchscreen Mac isn’t new. Reports dating back to 2023 hinted at such a project, and in 2024, the company was granted a patent showing a foldable tablet-like Mac with a keyboard accessory and macOS-like UI. There have also been ongoing rumors about a foldable iPad in development.
Whether this is a new direction or a delayed version of the earlier touchscreen Mac plans is still unclear. But Gurman’s timeline suggests Apple is playing the long game.
Meanwhile, Apple is also planning a major MacBook refresh for 2026, which could feature a 2nm M6 chip, OLED display, and an even thinner design. That could serve as a stepping stone to the hybrid future in 2028.
If the rumors hold true, Apple’s first foldable, touchscreen Mac-iPad hybrid could finally blend the power of macOS with the flexibility of a tablet, answering a request users have made for years.
