Sydney Sweeney has provided an optimistic update on her highly anticipated remake of the 1968 sci-fi cult classic Barbarella, despite the project being in development for over three years.
A Long-Awaited Reimagining
The original Barbarella movie, directed by Roger Vadim, featured Jane Fonda as the titular space adventurer, who embarks on a mission to save a scientist and prevent him from creating a deadly weapon.
While the film faced criticism for its writing, it gained a significant cult following due to its vibrant visuals and campy qualities. Now, Sweeney is leading the charge in bringing Barbarella to a new generation, both starring in the film and serving as an executive producer.
Sweeney’s Commitment
Although fans have been waiting for a major update, Sweeney has reassured them that the project is moving forward. In a recent interview with Empire, she shared that she had just met with the production team in London to discuss the script and the story.
Although she couldn’t reveal much, Sweeney expressed her excitement, saying, “It’s going to come together in a very, very fun and big way. It’s a long process, but it’s gonna be worth the wait.”
She also noted that Barbarella is a key project for her, highlighting how important it is as she steps into her thirties and focuses on taking her career to the next level.
A Long Process
While the film has seen delays, it’s not unusual for big projects to take time, especially one with such a rich history like Barbarella. Sweeney’s schedule has been packed with other roles, including Euphoria, The White Lotus, and Madame Webb, in addition to her upcoming projects.
Director Edgar Wright is also involved with the film, but his other commitments, including The Running Man adaptation, may have caused further delays.
Despite the wait, Sweeney’s enthusiasm indicates that the project is still very much in the works, and fans can look forward to a fun and exciting remake.
