Robert Downey Jr as Doctor Doom

MCU Debunks Big Doctor Doom Theory About Downey Jr.

Marvel Studios has officially shut down one of the biggest fan theories about Avengers: Doomsday.

Despite months of speculation, Robert Downey Jr. will not be playing a Tony Stark Variant. Instead, he is taking on the classic role of Victor von Doom, the legendary Fantastic Four villain.

No Multiverse Twist—It’s Doom, Not Stark

When Marvel announced in July 2024 that Downey Jr. would return to the MCU as Doctor Doom, fans quickly theorized that he might be playing a Variant of Iron Man gone evil. But a new behind-the-scenes photo posted by directors Joe and Anthony Russo debunks that idea. The image shows Downey’s set chair clearly labeled “Victor von Doom.”

This confirms what the Russo Brothers said on stage at San Diego Comic-Con last year: Downey Jr. was cast because he’s “the one person who could play Victor von Doom.”

What This Means for the MCU

Downey Jr.’s Doom will debut in Avengers: Doomsday on May 1, 2026, and return in Avengers: Secret Wars on May 6, 2027. The character’s resemblance to Tony Stark will likely be a powerful emotional element for the remaining Avengers, but he is not Tony Stark in any form.

This situation may mirror other Marvel double-castings—like Chris Evans, who played both Human Torch and Captain America, in entirely separate roles.

More to Come

So far, fans have only seen a brief look at Downey Jr. on the Doomsday set. No costume reveals or plot details have been released yet. However, more updates could be coming this July at San Diego Comic-Con.
