Google TV Gets Free Smart Home Upgrade – Even Older Devices Benefit

Google has quietly rolled out a major new feature to Chromecast and Google TV devices. The Home Panel, which was previously limited to newer models, is now available on many older devices through a free software update.

This new panel lets users control smart home devices—like lights, thermostats, doorbells, and cameras—directly from their TV screen. It appears on the right side of the screen and supports Google Home-compatible devices.

The update started rolling out earlier this week. Users have reported seeing the feature on discontinued Chromecast models and various Google TV sets, including Hisense TVs.

The Home Panel also shows smart notifications, such as alerts from a Nest Doorbell. However, it works only if the Google TV is connected to a Google Home account—not a child’s profile.

This update shows Google’s commitment to supporting existing Chromecast users, even though the company is no longer releasing new Chromecast models. If your device is eligible, you’ll see a prompt to set up the Home Panel once it updates.

This makes smart home control even easier—no phone or smart display needed. Just use your remote and TV.
