Google is working on adding a new feature to the Messages app that will allow users to share their live location in real time.
Currently, users can only share their location by selecting it through the in-app location picker, which sends a static Google Maps link.
However, a recent APK teardown (a method used to explore app code) reveals that Google is preparing to roll out a live location sharing feature soon.
This feature would allow you to share your location in real-time as you move, which could be especially useful when meeting friends or needing someone to pick you up.
The latest beta version of Google Messages (version messages.android_20250420_01_RC00) includes a line of code referring to a new “Live Location Sharing” shortcut. While this shortcut isn’t enabled yet, it’s clear that Google is getting ready to introduce this feature in the near future.
In the meantime, Google Messages still lets users share their location by sending a Google Maps link, which shows their position on the map, but it doesn’t track movement in real time.
It’s expected that once this feature is fully enabled, the app will include a new button or option to share live location, making it even more useful for users on the go.
Stay tuned for more details as Google gets closer to officially launching this live location sharing feature!
