Apple’s latest iOS 18.4 update introduces more customization options for default apps. Users can now replace Apple’s Translate app with third-party options like Google Translate.
Meanwhile, iPhone users in the EU will see another major addition: the ability to change the default navigation app from Apple Maps to services like Google Maps or Waze.
Default apps control which applications open automatically when performing tasks like messaging, browsing, or navigating. For example, selecting Google Maps as the default means any address tapped in iMessage will open in Google Maps instead of Apple Maps.
In the US, iPhone users now have nine default app categories:
- Messaging
- Calling
- Call Filtering
- Browser App
- Translation
- Passwords & Codes
- Contactless App
- Keyboards
In the EU, the Navigation category becomes the tenth option, allowing users to move away from Apple Maps for the first time.
To change default apps, users can go to Settings → Apps → Default Apps and select their preferred service.
The update gives users more control over their iPhone experience, though some are disappointed that navigation changes are limited to the EU. iOS 18.4 is rolling out now, so users can start customizing their defaults right away.
