Captain America: Brave New World has kicked off its second weekend at the box office with $7.5 million on Friday. The Marvel Studios blockbuster is now projected to earn between $25 million and $30 million over the full weekend.
This marks a slight decline from earlier estimates, but the film is still on track to remain at #1, despite stiff competition from Neon’s The Monkey.
The horror movie, which stars She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’s Tatiana Maslany, is showing surprising strength with an estimated $12 million – $14 million opening, making it Neon’s second-highest opening ever. While The Monkey is set to debut at #2, it’s clear that it is drawing attention away from the latest Marvel release.
If Captain America: Brave New World ends the weekend with $29 million, it will reflect a 67% drop from its opening weekend, pushing its 10-day total to around $142 million in North America. International numbers are still awaited.
Mixed Reception Hurts the Film’s Box Office Performance
Despite the star power of Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford, the film has received mixed reviews, which likely contributed to the box office dip.
The film currently holds a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a B- CinemaScore. Director Julius Onah addressed the criticism, expressing pride in the movie and emphasizing the importance of the audience experience.
Onah shared, “We worked very hard and are very passionate about the movie we made. We told the story in a way that I feel very excited about and very satisfied with.
Every single one of these movies [receives criticism], and maybe because it was so out-there in terms of some of the conversation, people perceiving certain things.”
What’s Next for Captain America: Brave New World?
While the mixed reception has hurt the film’s box office performance, Captain America: Brave New World continues to attract audiences, especially with the introduction of Red Hulk, which has been highlighted as a major draw in the film.
With Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford electrifying the screen, the movie still has plenty of action and excitement to keep Marvel fans engaged.
Captain America: Brave New World is now playing in theaters.
