Apple is once again exploring the idea of displaying ads in the Apple Maps app, according to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
While the tech giant previously considered this move in 2022, it ultimately did not proceed. Now, Apple appears to be revisiting the idea, although no engineering work has started yet.
How Ads in Apple Maps Might Work
Unlike banner ads seen on websites, Apple’s approach would likely focus on paid search results.
For example, when a user searches for “burgers” or “fries,” a fast-food chain could pay to appear at the top of the results. This model is already widely used in apps like Google Maps, Waze, and Yelp.
Apple has already integrated a similar search ads system in the App Store, where developers can promote their apps based on specific search keywords.
Introducing ads in Apple Maps would help Apple boost its services revenue, which has become a major focus for the company.
When Will This Happen?
While Apple is considering the idea, the company has not yet started development, meaning ads in Apple Maps could still be a long way off.
However, given the success of search ads in the App Store, it would not be surprising to see Apple eventually move forward with this plan.
For now, Apple Maps remains ad-free, but that could change in the future as Apple looks for new ways to grow its services business.
