Netflix is preparing for a major shift as two of its biggest hit series, Stranger Things and Squid Game, come to an end in 2025. These shows were once essential to Netflix’s success, driving millions of new subscribers.

But as the streaming giant evolves, it no longer relies on single blockbuster hits to maintain its dominance.

Stranger Things was one of Netflix’s first major cultural phenomena. Since its debut in 2016, it has influenced fashion, music, and even Halloween costumes.

Despite long gaps between seasons, it remained a huge draw for viewers, with season 4 introducing a new generation to Kate Bush’s song Running Up That Hill.

Squid Game, on the other hand, brought Netflix’s global strategy into the spotlight. The South Korean thriller became a surprise hit, leading to spin-offs like a reality competition, a video game, and additional seasons.

Stranger Things Season 5

Netflix confirmed that season 2, which premiered in December, had the best debut week in the platform’s history. Season 3, set to release in June, will be the final chapter.

With Stranger Things season 5 also set to conclude this year, Netflix is entering a new phase. Instead of relying on singular, must-watch series, the company has built a diverse catalog of content across multiple genres, including live events, reality TV, and even gaming.

As Netflix moves beyond its era of tentpole shows, the question remains: what will be the next big thing?
