OpenAI is facing a copyright lawsuit in India, filed by local and international book publishers. The lawsuit, filed in December 2024, targets the company’s AI chatbot, ChatGPT, over its use of copyrighted materials, including books, to generate summaries.

The Federation of Indian Publishers, representing major publishers like Bloomsbury, Penguin Random House, and Cambridge University Press, claims that ChatGPT uses their copyrighted content without permission.

They argue that the tool’s ability to provide book summaries could harm book sales and creativity. The lawsuit asks the court to stop OpenAI from using their copyrighted content or to delete the datasets used for training the AI.

OpenAI has denied the accusations, saying its AI systems use publicly available data and make fair use of it. The company also argued that it should not be subject to Indian laws since its servers are located abroad.

This case is one of several global lawsuits against OpenAI, as publishers, authors, and news agencies seek to protect their intellectual property rights in the age of generative AI.

The Indian case could be significant, as it might influence the future legal framework surrounding AI in India. The court is scheduled to hear the case on January 28, 2025.
