Adam Scott, known for his role in the hit Apple TV+ series Severance, is uncertain about returning to the superhero genre following his appearance in Sony’s Madame Web.
In the 2024 film, Scott played Ben Parker, the brother-in-law of Mary Parker (Emma Roberts) and Peter Parker’s future Uncle Ben.
Despite the high-profile role, Madame Web struggled critically and commercially, grossing only $100 million worldwide and receiving widespread negative reviews.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, Scott reflected on his potential future in comic book movies. “I don’t know. Never say never,” he said. “I think that it’s a genre that I, certainly, as an audience member, participate in. I like seeing all those movies; I watch them all.”
Scott, a self-described former “comic book nerd,” shared his childhood love for comics during an appearance on The Jess Cagle Show. Growing up in Santa Cruz, California, he frequented the Atlantis Fantasyworld comic book shop, which also appeared in the 1987 film The Lost Boys.
While Madame Web hinted at a sequel with Dakota Johnson’s Cassandra Webb mentoring a group of Spider-Women, the film’s poor performance has reportedly halted plans for future installments in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU).
This comes on the heels of other SSU misfires, including Kraven the Hunter and Venom: The Last Dance. Sony Pictures executives have attributed the franchise’s struggles to harsh critical reception rather than the quality of the films themselves.
Former Sony Pictures Chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra defended the projects, saying, “These are not terrible films. They were just destroyed by the critics in the press, for some reason.”
As for Scott, his immediate focus remains on Severance, with its highly anticipated second season premiering January 17 on Apple TV+.
Whether or not he returns to the superhero genre, his diverse career continues to captivate audiences.
