Google Keep Brings Back Single-Tap Note Creation Option

Google Keep

Google Keep is introducing a “Create text notes with a single tap” setting, addressing user feedback on its redesigned floating action button (FAB).

This update is currently being tested in version 5.25.014.x of the app, though it is not yet widely available.

The Problem with the Redesign

In November, Google redesigned Keep’s FAB, making note creation a two-step process. Tapping the FAB now opens a menu with four options: Text, List, Drawing, and Image.

While the redesign added flexibility, it disrupted users’ muscle memory and caused confusion. Many users reported accidentally closing the menu by tapping twice, thinking their first tap didn’t register.

The New Solution

The upcoming single-tap setting, found under Display options, will allow users to immediately open a new text note when tapping the FAB.

Other note types will remain accessible through a ‘plus’ menu in the bottom-left corner of the text note screen.

This approach balances speed and functionality, letting users retain the redesign while restoring the simplicity of single-tap note creation.

Availability

The feature is currently hidden in the app’s code and requires a server-side update for full activation. Google has yet to announce a timeline for its official rollout.

For users frustrated with the current FAB design, this update promises a more seamless note-taking experience.
