Tintin, Mickey Mouse, and More Enter Public Domain

As the year begins, many famous works have entered the public domain, becoming available for anyone to use, adapt, or share.

These works, originally copyrighted in 1929 and 1924, include films, music, and books that are now free to the public.

Big Films from 1929: This year, several important films are now in the public domain, including Alfred Hitchcock’s Blackmail and Cecil B. DeMille’s Dynamite.

1929 also saw Walt Disney’s Skeleton Dance, the first animated film with synchronized sound, and Mickey Mouse’s first sound film. Tintin and Popeye, popular characters from the time, are also now available for anyone to use.

Music Now Free to Use: Several famous songs are now in the public domain. These include Singin’ in the Rain, An American in Paris, and jazz standards like Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Black and Blue. George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Marian Anderson’s My Way’s Cloudy are also now free to be used.

Books by Famous Authors: Several classic books are now part of the public domain. These include The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett, A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, and The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner. Works by Virginia Woolf, Agatha Christie, and Rainer Maria Rilke are also now available.

This marks a big moment for artists, filmmakers, and creators who can now adapt, share, and build on these works without needing permission.
