How What If…? Season 3 Redefines the Watcher’s Role in the MCU

What If The Watcher

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has taken a bold step in What If…? Season 3, breaking a key rule tied to Uatu the Watcher since his introduction in 1964.

Uatu, a cosmic being sworn to observe but never interfere, defies his oath twice in episodes 5 and 6, casting a darker light on the MCU’s biggest wars.

The Watcher’s Role and His Rule-Breaking Moments

Traditionally, Uatu serves as a narrator, guiding audiences through alternate realities in the multiverse. However, his emotional vulnerability leads him to intervene.

In episode 5, he rescues Riri Williams (Ironheart) from Mysterio, and in episode 6, he prevents the death of young Kwai Jun-Fan. These actions highlight his growing frustration with his passive role.

Why Uatu’s Actions Are Significant

Uatu’s decision to intervene raises questions about his previous inaction during catastrophic events, like Thanos’ snap or the Multiverse’s collapse.

If he had the power to save individuals, why didn’t he step in during larger-scale tragedies? This inconsistency deepens the moral complexity of the character and the MCU’s storytelling.

As What If…? continues to explore the multiverse, Uatu’s newfound willingness to act could lead to his involvement in live-action MCU films, further blurring the lines between observer and participant.

What If…? Season 3 is currently streaming on Disney+.
