Apple AI Misfires Again, This Time With False Report on CEO Shooting

Apple is facing pressure to remove its AI-powered headline summaries after it mistakenly reported that suspected UnitedHealthcare CEO shooter Luigi Mangione had killed himself.

The error, which appeared in a BBC news notification, was flagged by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), who called the AI system “immature” and unreliable for generating news summaries.

RSF criticized Apple’s new AI feature, launched in the UK on December 11, for its failure to produce accurate information, highlighting the risks of using AI to automate news reporting.

The organization argued that the probabilistic nature of AI systems makes them unsuitable for delivering trustworthy news to the public.

The BBC has also filed a complaint, but Apple has yet to comment on the matter. This incident is not the first time Apple’s AI has generated false news summaries.

The BBC pointed out a previous error in November, where the AI falsely reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been arrested, attributing the claim to the New York Times.

RSF’s Vincent Berthier warned that AI-generated misinformation harms media credibility and undermines the public’s right to accurate news. He urged Apple to act responsibly by removing the feature from its operating systems.
