Sega to Launch New Game Streaming Service Like Netflix

Sega is exploring the idea of launching its own game subscription service, similar to Netflix, which could push gaming further into the world of streaming.

This would allow players to access a variety of games for a monthly fee, rather than owning individual titles.

Sega’s president, Shuji Utsumi, spoke about the idea, calling it “very interesting” and said the company is considering several options. However, he did not reveal any specifics yet.

Other companies, like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, already offer similar services. These services charge monthly fees ranging from £6.99 to £14.99, depending on the features and games included.

While this model could make sense for Sega to boost its own revenue, it may also lead to higher costs for gamers, who would need to pay for multiple subscriptions.

Some experts, like Rachel Howie, a Twitch streamer, expressed excitement and concern. “We already have so many subscriptions that it’s hard to justify adding another,” she said.

Others, like Sophie Smart from the UK game studio No More Robots, are hopeful but wonder if Sega’s service would mean its games are removed from other platforms, leading to more costs for consumers.

Sega is also focused on revitalizing its brand. Utsumi expressed a desire to make Sega “shiny again” and expand beyond its base in Japan. He mentioned the company has great games and intellectual properties, and now is the time to be more aggressive in the global market.

Sega has had a successful year, with new games like Metaphor: ReFantazio winning awards. However, it has also faced challenges, including job cuts and delays in releasing Football Manager 2025.

Despite these hurdles, the company remains optimistic about its future, with the release of the third Sonic the Hedgehog movie adding to its success outside of gaming.
