Google Wallet now allows Android users to add passport IDs for domestic travel in the U.S.

The feature, first tested in October, is available in the stable version of Google Wallet with Google Play services version 24.47.35 on Android 9+ devices.

How It Works

To add your passport ID:

  1. Open Google Wallet and tap “Add to Wallet.”
  2. Select “ID” and then choose “ID pass.”
  3. Follow a three-step process:
    • Take a photo of your passport’s info page or enter details manually.
    • Scan the security chip inside the passport’s back cover using NFC.
    • Record a short video of your face for verification.

Google compares the video to your passport photo to ensure authenticity and ownership.

Usage at Airports

The digital passport ID can be used at TSA checkpoints for domestic travel in the U.S. You can either scan a QR code or tap your phone on an NFC reader to share the necessary details.

Note, this isn’t a government-issued ID replacement and doesn’t support international travel.

Stay Secure

If your phone is lost, you can remove the ID pass via myaccount.google.com. Always carry your physical ID as a backup.

This feature is another step forward in digital ID integration, making travel more convenient for Android users.
