Huawei’s Harmony OS Next Can Run Android Apps with New Tool

76
HarmonyOS

Huawei’s upcoming Harmony OS Next moves away from Android compatibility, but a new tool called “Easy Abroad” offers a workaround to run Android apps like Chrome, Spotify, and Gmail.

Key Features of “Easy Abroad”

  • Android App Compatibility: The tool creates a container to run popular Android apps on Harmony OS Next devices.
  • App Availability: Users can install apps such as Facebook, YouTube, Uber, and Netflix from a built-in app store.
  • Performance: Apps run smoothly, launch quickly, and even appear in the recents menu.

Limitations to Keep in Mind

  1. Play Integrity Checks: Many apps may not work due to compatibility issues with Google’s security measures.
  2. MicroG Services: Limited support for features requiring Google Play Services.
  3. App Whitelisting: Only select Android apps are supported.
  4. Notifications: Alerts are only available while apps are open.
  5. Video Quality: Streaming apps like Netflix are capped at SD resolution due to missing Widevine L1 DRM.
  6. File Access: Android apps can’t directly access Harmony OS Next files but allow limited sharing.

Why It Matters

With Harmony OS Next shifting focus to become a true Android alternative, Huawei faces challenges convincing international developers to support the platform. “Easy Abroad” could provide a temporary solution for users reliant on Android apps while the OS establishes its ecosystem.

Huawei is expected to launch Harmony OS Next officially next year. If you’re testing the beta, try the Easy Abroad app and share your experience!
