Microsoft and Google are embroiled in a high-stakes battle that could shape the future of mobile gaming on Android.
At the heart of the dispute is Microsoftโs unlaunched Xbox game store for Android, which hinges on court rulings that could force Googleโs Play Store to open up to competition.
Microsoftโs Vision Blocked
Microsoft aims to sell Xbox games directly through its Android app and enable users to stream games instantly.
These features would bypass Googleโs 30% transaction fee, a key sticking point for Microsoft.
However, Google won a temporary administrative stay in November, delaying the changes Microsoft needs to proceed.
Xbox President Sarah Bond expressed frustration in a Bluesky post:
- โOur team has the functionality built and ready to go live as soon as the court makes a final decision.โ
Google Responds
Google argues that Microsoft isnโt being forthright. According to spokesperson Dan Jackson:
- โMicrosoft has always been able to offer their Android users the ability to play and purchase Xbox games directly from their app โ theyโve simply chosen not to.โ
Microsoft previously allowed game purchases in the Xbox app but removed the feature in 2020 when it integrated remote console streaming. Googleโs policies would require Microsoft to pay the 30% cut if the feature returned.
Whatโs at Stake?
The outcome could redefine mobile gaming economics and competition on Android. For now, Microsoftโs Xbox mobile ambitions remain on hold as the courts decide whether Google must loosen its grip on app store policies.
