OpenAI Moves to Trademark Its o1 ‘Reasoning’ Models

OpenAI has filed for a trademark for its new AI model, o1, designed to perform complex tasks and self-check its responses.

This reasoning AI helps avoid common mistakes by spending more time considering queries. The trademark application was submitted to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Tuesday, though it’s still awaiting approval.

OpenAI had previously filed for a foreign trademark in Jamaica earlier this year, months before the o1’s announcement.

This filing adds to OpenAI’s growing list of trademarks, including ChatGPT, Sora, and DALL-E. Earlier in 2024, OpenAI failed to trademark GPT, as it was deemed too generic.

The company is also in a legal battle over the name “Open AI” with entrepreneur Guy Ravine, who claimed to have pitched the name in 2015. A recent court ruling favored OpenAI in this dispute.
