PS5 Pro PSSR Holds Its Ground but Falls Short of AMD FSR 2 and NVIDIA DLSS

The PlayStation 5 Pro’s Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaler delivers decent image quality in The Last of Us Part 1 and Part 2, but it struggles to match the performance of AMD FSR 2 and NVIDIA DLSS.

According to Digital Foundry’s analysis, PSSR performs well in motion, preserving details better than its competitors. However, it suffers from image noise that FSR 2 avoids and lacks the sharpness and stability that FSR 2 provides when the camera is still.

Compared to NVIDIA DLSS, PSSR shows even more limitations. DLSS consistently delivers smoother and cleaner visuals in most scenarios, with near-flawless image quality in static scenes and superior performance in motion.

While PSSR shows potential, especially in handling motion detail, it is clear that it needs further refinement to compete with more established upscaling technologies.

The PlayStation 5 Pro’s upscaler is a promising step forward but highlights the need for Sony to improve its implementation.

As it stands, PSSR lags behind in certain areas, leaving room for improvement in future updates.
