Huawei has created a Magneto-Electric Disk (MED) storage system combining SSD and tape technology, likely in response to US export restrictions.

The hybrid solution offers an innovative approach to data storage by merging solid-state and tape technologies into a single compact device.

The first-generation MED will offer 72TB storage capacity while consuming just 10% of the power required by traditional disk drives. Its unique design features a shortened tape reel and an additional empty reel, allowing for more efficient data management.

The system can handle both warm and cold data, with the SSD providing rapid access to frequently used information and the tape system storing less-accessed data.

Huawei’s rack configuration promises impressive performance, delivering 8GBps of data transfer and over 10PB of storage while consuming less than 2kW of electricity.

The device allows data retrieval from tape storage in up to two minutes, making it a flexible solution for various storage needs.

Expected to launch in 2025, this MED system demonstrates Huawei’s innovative approach to overcoming technological limitations, potentially setting a new standard for data storage solutions.
