‘28 Years Later’ Surprises With $60M, While ‘Elio’ Struggles to Lift Off

The global box office saw mixed results this weekend, with 28 Years Later leading the way. Danny Boyle’s horror sequel earned $60 million worldwide, split evenly between $30 million domestic and $30 million international. This is slightly better than expected.

The movie opened at No. 1 in the UK with $6.4 million, followed by Mexico with $2.7 million. Other strong markets included Australia, Korea, Germany, and France, all making over $1 million each.

Meanwhile, Pixar’s ‘Elio’ failed to take off. It earned $35 million globally, with only $14 million coming from overseas markets. This is much lower than projections, even though the movie received good audience reactions. Many kids are still in school in key markets, which may explain the slow start.

Universal’s ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ live-action remake continues to fly high. It has now reached $358 million worldwide, adding $53.6 million in its second weekend. The movie remains No.1 in most markets except for the UK, China, and Korea.

Disney’s ‘Lilo & Stitch’ live-action film crossed a new milestone, passing $910 million worldwide after five weeks. It remains a major success for Disney’s summer lineup.

Finally, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has earned $540 million globally after five weekends, with China, the UK, and Japan leading the international numbers.

The summer box office is heating up, but while horror and live-action remakes are performing strongly, original animated films like ‘Elio’ still face challenges.
