At least two people were killed and a dozen others injured — including a child — in a mass shooting in downtown Montgomery, Alabama, late Saturday night, Oct. 4.
Montgomery Police Department (MPD) Chief James Graboys said police responded to the incident at around 11:30 p.m. local time. Authorities confirmed that 14 people were struck by gunfire, with two dying at the scene and three sustaining life-threatening injuries. The remaining nine victims are not believed to have life-threatening wounds.
An adult woman was among the fatalities, and at least one of the severely injured is a child, MPD Lt. Tina McGriff confirmed. The identities of the victims have not been released.
The shooting occurred during a busy evening in the city, coinciding with a college football game between Tuskegee University and Morehouse College, as well as a local fair.
Police described the shooting as a “senseless act of violence” between two parties firing at each other in a crowded area. Chief Graboys said, “The people who did what they did…did not care about the people around them when they did it.”
Authorities are interviewing suspects and reviewing witness statements and surveillance footage to identify those responsible. Roads near the shooting were temporarily closed as police continue their investigation.
Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed called the act “reckless and selfish” and promised law enforcement would pursue justice for all involved. Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact MPD at 334-625-2831 or Central Alabama CrimeStoppers at 334-215-7867.
