Xiaomi has taken a bold step in artificial intelligence by hiring Luo Fuli, a leading developer of DeepSeek-V2, to lead its large-scale AI model team.
This move highlights Xiaomi’s focus on advancing AI under CEO Lei Jun’s leadership.
Who is Luo Fuli?
Luo Fuli studied computational linguistics at Peking University. She started her career at Alibaba’s DAMO Academy, where she contributed to VECO, a multilingual pre-training model known for cross-lingual comprehension. VECO became part of Alibaba’s advanced language model system, AliceMind.
In 2022, Luo joined DeepSeek and helped develop DeepSeek-V2, an advanced large model using a mixture of experts (MoE) approach. Her experience in AI research makes her a valuable addition to Xiaomi’s team.
Xiaomi’s Late Start in AI Models
Lei Jun has previously expressed concerns about Xiaomi entering the AI field later than competitors.
However, Xiaomi is determined to catch up by hiring top talent like Luo Fuli and offering competitive salaries. This move reflects Xiaomi’s commitment to becoming a leader in AI innovation.
Xiaomi AI Lab’s Role
Xiaomi AI Lab established a large model team in April 2023, led by Luan Jian. The team focuses on developing advanced AI solutions and reports directly to Wang Bin, Xiaomi’s Vice Chairman. Luo Fuli’s addition strengthens the team’s capabilities in creating multilingual and large-scale AI models.
Strategic Implications
With Luo Fuli onboard, Xiaomi aims to enhance its AI ecosystem, including smart devices, voice assistants, and other AI-driven services.
This recruitment signals Xiaomi’s aggressive approach to AI development and aligns with Lei Jun’s vision of integrating advanced AI into Xiaomi’s products.
By investing in top talent and cutting-edge technology, Xiaomi is positioning itself as a strong competitor in the AI landscape.
Luo Fuli’s expertise is expected to drive significant advancements in Xiaomi’s AI Lab and its overall strategy.
