Xiaomi will officially reveal its first SUV, the YU7, on May 22. The launch event will start at 7 pm Beijing time. Xiaomi says this SUV could change the electric vehicle market in China.
Xiaomi EV, the company’s electric vehicle division, shared the news on Weibo. The event will also introduce Xiaomi’s new mobile chip, the Xring O1, along with the Xiaomi 15S Pro smartphone and Xiaomi 7 Ultra tablet.
Xiaomi entered the electric car market in March 2024 with its first model, the SU7 sedan, which competes with Tesla’s Model 3. It later launched a more powerful version, the SU7 Ultra.
The YU7, announced in December, is designed to compete with Tesla’s Model Y. It is slightly larger than the Model Y in length, width, and wheelbase.
Despite strong sales with more than 28,000 vehicles delivered in April, Xiaomi EV has faced challenges. A crash involving the SU7 in March killed three people, and recent complaints about the SU7’s quality have caused concern. Sales have dropped for three weeks in a row.
Xiaomi aims to bounce back with the YU7 SUV and its upcoming product launches.
