Xiaomi has reportedly canceled its upcoming foldable smartphone, the MIX Fold 5, after leaks revealed an advanced prototype. The device, which could have reshaped Xiaomi’s design language, will not reach the market.
The MIX Fold 5 featured a bold “Visor” horizontal camera design, marking a departure from the square or circular modules seen on previous models. The triple-camera setup was arranged side by side, providing symmetry to prevent wobbling when placed on flat surfaces. Analysts noted similarities to the camera layouts rumored for the iPhone 17 Air and Google Pixel devices.
The prototype showcased premium materials, including a reflective rear panel—likely polished ceramic or Mirror Silver coating—and a high-end metal chassis, possibly Titanium or aerospace-grade aluminum.
Sharp corners replaced the softer curves of the MIX Fold 4, achieving a higher screen-to-body ratio and giving the phone a more “industrial” look. Large corner speakers suggested a potential quad-speaker system for enhanced audio.
The reasons for cancellation remain unclear. Possible factors include:
- Design alignment – Xiaomi may have opted for a design more consistent with the Xiaomi 15 and 17 series.
- Competitive differentiation – Rumors about Apple adopting a similar horizontal camera layout may have influenced Xiaomi’s decision.
- Global strategy shift – Xiaomi may be reserving more radical innovations for a broader international launch.
Leaked images of a mid-frame intended for the Xiaomi 15 Pro suggest that this horizontal “visor” design was considered for other models but ultimately rejected due to incompatibility with production motherboards.
If released, the MIX Fold 5’s Mirror Silver finish, sharp corners, and horizontal camera bar would have made it one of the most stylish foldables on the market. For now, it remains an engineering sample—a glimpse into Xiaomi’s experimentation with future foldable designs.
