Xiaomi and AMD are preparing to enter the smartphone System-on-Chip (SoC) market, potentially disrupting the current landscape dominated by Qualcomm, MediaTek, Apple, and Samsung.

A Taiwanese media report suggests both companies are developing new smartphone chips that could be available by 2025/2026.

Xiaomi has already completed a 3 nm chip, which is expected to be ready for mass production in early 2025. The company is likely to first implement these chips in its own smartphone lineup, including Redmi and Poco models.

Historically, Xiaomi has been quick to adopt new chip technologies, so it may continue using existing manufacturers’ chips until its own technology matures.

AMD’s strategy appears focused on competitive pricing, aiming to offer similar performance at lower costs. While details remain limited, there are rumors about a potential chip called Sound Wave. However, it’s unclear whether this chip is designed for Android smartphones or Windows-on-Arm devices.

The potential entry of Xiaomi and AMD could introduce significant competition to the smartphone chip market, potentially driving innovation and potentially lowering prices for consumers.

Existing chip manufacturers will need to respond to these new challengers to maintain their market position.
