Max Verstappen delivered a commanding performance to win the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, navigating a chaotic race at the Baku City Circuit marked by crashes and safety cars. The Red Bull driver’s victory, his ninth of the season, strengthens his lead in the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, as reported on September 21, 2025.

Starting from pole after a dramatic qualifying session with six red flags, Verstappen maintained control despite challenging windy conditions. The race took a dramatic turn on Lap 1 when championship leader Oscar Piastri crashed out, ending his hopes of extending his points lead. This incident triggered an early safety car, reshaping the race dynamics.

Verstappen faced pressure from Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and McLaren’s Lando Norris, but Red Bull’s strategic pit stops kept him ahead. A second safety car was deployed after a collision between Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez on lap 38, which eliminated both drivers.

Verstappen capitalized on the restart, pulling away to secure the win by 2.3 seconds over Mercedes’ George Russell, who claimed second, with Sainz taking third for Williams—his first podium with the team.

“It was a Max masterclass in Baku,” Sky Sports F1 noted, praising Verstappen’s ability to manage tires and maintain composure. Norris recovered to fourth, followed by Alpine’s Pierre Gasly in fifth.

The Leclerc-Perez incident is under investigation by FIA stewards, with potential penalties pending (The Athletic). Verstappen’s victory extends his championship lead, while Red Bull widened their Constructors’ Championship advantage over McLaren.

The Formula 1 season now heads to Singapore, where Verstappen aims to inch closer to a fourth consecutive world title.
