US Calls on Israel to Stop Airstrikes on Syrian Army in Southern Syria

The United States has urged Israel to stop its recent airstrikes on Syrian government forces in southern Syria, as violence in the region continues to escalate. The call comes after several Israeli attacks over the past two days targeting Syrian troops near the city of Suwayda, home to a large Druze population.

Israel says the airstrikes are aimed at preventing Syrian military units from entering what it considers a demilitarized zone. Israeli officials argue the strikes are necessary to protect the Druze minority, with whom Israel shares historical and familial ties.

According to the Israeli Defence Forces, their attacks have focused on Syrian tanks and troops approaching Suwayda, which they view as a security threat.

The Syrian government has condemned the Israeli actions, rejecting Israel’s claims about a demilitarized zone. Syrian officials hold Israel responsible for the attacks and have promised to take legal action against those involved. Damascus also says it is committed to protecting all citizens, including the Druze community.

The conflict in southern Syria has intensified in recent days, as the Syrian military moved into Suwayda to confront armed groups. Deadly clashes between local Druze fighters and Bedouin tribes have resulted in dozens of deaths, worsening the region’s instability.

Inside the Druze community, opinions are divided. Some leaders support working with the Syrian government to restore order, while others accuse Damascus of forcing agreements on the population and continuing to target residents.

One prominent Druze spiritual leader described the situation as a “war of extermination” and called for resistance against the government’s military campaign.

The US request for Israel to halt its attacks reflects Washington’s concern over the growing violence and the potential for further escalation. The situation highlights the continuing complexity of Syria’s civil conflict, where local disputes are often linked to broader regional tensions.
