Ukraine has chosen Mstyslav Chernov’s documentary 2000 Meters to Andriivka as its official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards.

The film follows a Ukrainian platoon’s mission to liberate the village of Andriivka from Russian forces. Using helmet cameras, drones, and on-the-ground footage, it offers a raw and unfiltered view of modern warfare and the resilience of soldiers facing extreme conditions.

The Ukrainian Oscar Committee praised the work as “an uncompromisingly honest and insightful documentary” that captures the human cost of the ongoing conflict.

Chernov, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, previously won the 2024 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature with 20 Days in Mariupol. His latest project premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where he received the Best Directing award in the World Documentary program. The film has also earned the F:ACT Award at CPH:DOX and multiple honors at DocuDaysUA.

Despite Ukraine’s regular submissions since 1997, the country has yet to secure a nomination in the international feature category. Previous entries include Atlantis (2019), Klondike (2022), and Luxembourg, Luxembourg (2023).

The Academy will announce the international feature shortlist on December 16, followed by the final five nominees on January 22.
