U.S. President Donald Trump has called for billionaire George Soros and his son, Alexander Soros, to face federal racketeering charges, accusing them of supporting “violent protests” across the country.
In a post on Truth Social on 27 August, Trump urged prosecutors to apply the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act against the Soros family. He did not specify which protests he was referring to, nor did he provide evidence to support his claims.
The Soros family has been a frequent target of criticism from conservatives due to their financial support for Democratic candidates and progressive causes. Their philanthropic network, the Open Society Foundations, funds initiatives related to human rights and democratic governance.
Responding on X, the Open Society Foundations called Trump’s accusations “outrageous and false,” denying any role in funding violent protests. The group stressed its commitment to free speech and peaceful protest as “core democratic values.”
Trump’s post also included a warning: “Be careful, we’re watching you!” The message follows a pattern in which he has publicly threatened political opponents with legal action. In recent months, he has directed similar rhetoric at figures such as Senator Adam Schiff and former National Security Adviser John Bolton.
At present, there has been no confirmation from the Justice Department or other federal agencies that an investigation into the Soros family is underway. No charges have been filed.
The development underscores the continuing political tensions between Trump and high-profile Democratic donors, and has raised concerns among critics about the potential use of federal power against political rivals.
